چکیده

Using an artificial H I Lyα spectrum we simulate the corresponding He II forest with fixed values of η and a Doppler parameter consisting of a thermal and a turbulent part. In addition metal lines with line strengths and line density as expected in the case of HS 1700+6416 are superimposed. FUSE-like noise is added. The analysis of the simulated spectra in terms of Doppler profiles recovers the input η = N (He II)/N (H I) with a scatter by a factor of 10. About 10 % have significantly lower η-values for various reasons. The majority of the extremely high η-values (up to 1000) are evidently caused by metal lines. We conclude that part of the scatter in η of previous analyses of the He II forest in HE 2347-4342 can be regarded as an artifact. However, we confirm that the correlation between small column densities (in voids) and high η-values is not a methodical artifact and appears to be a true phenomenon.

Probing the universe with the Lyman-alpha forest: III. The mean opacity of the IGM

I apply the well controlled Hydro-PM approximation of Gnedin & Hui to study the consistency between the column density distribution of the Lyman-alpha forest and the mean opacity of the IGM for 25 different flat cosmological scenarios, including variants of the standard CDM, tilted CDM, CDM with a cosmological constant, and CHDMmodels. I show that observational data of Press, Rybicki, and Schne...

Intergalactic He II absorption and the baryonic content of the Lyman forest

Intervening intergalactic HeII λ304 absorption has so far been detected toward four high redshift quasars by HST and HUT. The quantitative interpretation of these data provides a measure of the ionization in the absorbing gas in the form of the ratio of residual HeII ions to HI atoms. Assuming a standard Big Bang helium abundance, this ratio can be used to derive a lower limit on the baryonic c...

The He II Opacity of the Lyman α Forest and the Intergalactic Medium

Primordial baryonic matter in the vast intergalactic space may be traced with Lyα resonance absorption by neutral hydrogen and singly ionized helium. The wavelengthaveraged He ii opacity shortward of 304(1+z) Å, as measured by low-resolution UV spectroscopy, is at least 4.5 times the H i opacity shortward of 1216(1+z) Å. While a part of the He ii opacity arises from the intergalactic regions th...

The first galaxies: clues from element abundances

It has recently become possible to measure directly the abundances of several chemical elements in a variety of environments at redshifts up to z ' 5. In this review I summarise the latest observations of Lyman break galaxies, damped Lyman alpha systems and the Lyman alpha forest with a view to uncovering any clues which these data may offer to the first episodes of star formation. The picture ...

The Lyman-alpha Forest: a Cosmic Gold Mine

In recent years, a remarkably simple physical picture of the Lyman-alpha forest has emerged, which allows detailed predictions to be made and turns the forest into a powerful probe of cosmology. We point out ways in which such a picture can be tested observationally, and explore three areas in which the Lyman-alpha forest can yield valuable constraints: the reionization history, the primordial ...
